Signs of Manic Episode

On the other side of the coin is the manic episode in which individuals seem to feel “better” but in effect they are no better off. They are now experiencing a variety of symptoms

that seem opposite of that during the depressive stages. What’s more, many believe that they feel better during this stage and therefore are more willing to write off the depressive conditions. Here are some of the feelings individuals go through during their manic episode.
  • They have an inflated self esteem and ego. Grandiosity is evident.
  • They do not feel they need to get sleep and therefore will feel rested after just two to three hours worth of sleep. Although they feel this way, that is not the case at all.
  • They are more talkative. In comparison to their normal state, they are more willing to share thoughts, ideas or just talk about anything. They feel pressure to keep talking.
  • They have racing thoughts, or thoughts that just do not stop. Many times, the thoughts are running across the board.
  • Their attention is moved to the least important things. They are paying attention to small, irrelevant things instead of larger concerns.
  • They are more likely to put themselves in a position that is risky or could cause potential harm to them. While these may be pleasurable activities, the heightened risk is out of the norm for the. For example, they engage in poor business investments, in sexual activity that is poor judgment, or they are unable to stop spending money.
  • They have more of a drive to reach a goal, no matter what the goal is.

Individuals that experience both manic and depressive episodes are not in their “normal” state of mind, but this can become just that. With a constant move from one extreme to the next, these individuals are truly suffering without realizing that they are. The symptoms of bipolar disorder are very much real and need to be analyzed by a professional as soon as possible.
